Appearance: This Scottish ale has a reddish amber tint.
Smell: Three Floyds brews are known for their high malty profile but this beer surprisingly the first scent you notice is a chocolate brownie one. There are hints of dried fruits (like raisins and prunes).
Taste: With the first sip you get a deep caramelized and little smokey flavor. In the next few sips the that chocolate flavors comes through. It finishes with a hint of bitterness from the malts.
Mouthfeel: Sweet and full to the palate. Slightly carbonated and robust yet finishes smoothly.
Overall: Three Floyds are in my top five breweries. Everything that their putting out is so well crafted. They balance their signature malty bitterness and different flavors. No wonder I enjoyed Robert the Bruce so much. This beer was shockingly smooth. The sweet dried fruit complements the chocolate notes which balance out the bitterness. It’s like a symphony to the palate. This beer would pair well with a chocolate dessert. I give this beer a 8.8 out of 10.
